February's WideField of Dreams

Five students from Sproul Junior High are making history in Widefield School District 3. These talented students auditioned earlier in the school year, along with 1,000 other students across the state, to perform at the Colorado Middle School All State Choir.

John Christopherson, Rita Mafnas, Faith Gerweck, Lara Glommen, and Chloe Hilby were part of the lucky 300 picked to sing at the Colorado Convention Center February 5 and 6. This is the first time WSD3 has had its students represented at this event.
Out with the Old…In with the New!

As many of you know the former state assessment program – TCAP – has been replaced by the new CMAS – Colorado Measures of Academic Success. This spring students in grades 3-11 will take the new on-line assessments in the areas of English/language arts and mathematics. For the first round of testing the dates are March 3
rd -March 27th. Students will complete three units for English/language arts and two units for mathematics. These new assessments are intended to measure the level of command a student has on the Common Core State Standards. Please be sure to look for a testing schedule to come home in February. As in the past we ask that you try and not schedule appointments or vacations during the testing window, it is so important that students complete each test in each content area.

If you are interested in seeing what the new assessments look like and what types of questions your student will be given to show their knowledge and application of skills simply go to http://parcc.pearson.com/sample-items - there you will have a choice of selecting the level for grades 3-5, 6-8 or high school. For each level there are sample items for English/language arts and mathematics.
